Early this year we bought new flowers pots for the Chestnut street-side of the office building, and with the early spring and are excited to start filling them up with new flowers.

Thursday was a busy day, shopping for flowers and filling the pots. I like buying locally grown flowers for our outdoor planters. There are cheaper places to buy the flowers, but over the years, I’ve noticed a difference between cheap flatbed flowers from a hardware store and locally grown flowers. The locally grown, like these in the greenhouses of Wickman’s garden will grow much bigger and better in the upcoming months.

Chestnut Expressway at U.S. 65 is scheduled to be reopened to traffic Friday morning July 1st, weeks earlier than the August 1 date that Missouri Department of Transportation had previously predicted when it closed the underpass on June 19.

The area was closed in mid-June so crews could do work on the U.S. 65 bridge to expand the highway to six lanes. Work required on structures under the bridge deck made it unsafe when trucks, RVs, and other tall vehicles attempted to pass underneath Chestnut Expressway.

Previously, transportation officials announced Chestnut could be closed until August 1, but now the goal is to reopen the road by Friday morning rush hour, the Missouri Department of Transportation said in a news release.

MoDOT estimates that 23,000 to 25,000 motorists drive on Chestnut Expressway under U.S. 65 each day, and during the temporary closure, those drivers had to find different routes to their destinations.

The early re-opening of the underpass that is only a few blocks away from the RDI Building is good news to our tenants and their clients –thanks to good weather, MoDOT, and highway contractor, Emery Sapp and Sons of Columbia, MO.

There’s been a lot of work on new poles and underground cable in the median dividing Chestnut Expressway in front of the RDI Building over the past few months. The poles support traffic cameras being installed as part of the City of Springfield’s new Traffic Management system, designed to improve traffic flow, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance driving safety along major streets and highways in Springfield and along Interstate 44 through the region.

Installation of the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) began late September 2010. The new equipment includes 16 electronic message signs, 27 traffic viewing cameras and 31 wireless traffic detectors embedded in roadways. The new traffic cameras may help drivers avoid backups and gridlock in Springfield, MO.

The new 11,500-square-foot facility was built and equipped for $3.2 million, with about half of that cost coming from federal earmarks and the other half coming from state and local funds. It is a partnership project between the City of Springfield and the Missouri Department of Transportation. Construction on the center began in January 2010. The Transportation Management Center of the Ozarks located 1111 W. Chestnut Expressway inside the Springfield Public Works Operations Center complex that was dedicated at a ribbon-cutting Wednesday, April 13.

Initially, the new TMC will provide “real time” oversight of the joint MoDOT/City signal system — more than 250 traffic signals and 42 traffic-monitoring cameras. Included are seven cameras positioned along I-44 in Greene, Webster and Laclede counties. (The state-city traffic management operation has been located in rented space since 1998. The first location was in The Discovery Center.)

The new TMC of the Ozarks is designed to expand its capabilities to remotely manage signals in other communities in MoDOT’s 12-county Springfield Region who choose to become a TMC partner, and it’s the nerve center for the Advanced Traffic Management System that will control the new equipment located along major City and MoDOT arterials and freeways.

The new TMC contains an 845-square-foot training room, which can function as an operations center for transportation emergencies or planned events, such as the temporary closing of a major roadway for construction.

The TMC of the Ozarks was designed by Esterly Schneider and Associates Inc. of Springfield, with construction by Denali Construction of Springfield.

For more information, contact Jason Haynes, Co-Interim Traffic Engineer with the City of Springfield, at (417) 864-1167, or Adam Humphrey, traffic operations engineer with MoDOT, at (417) 874-2177.
