9th Annual Economic Outlook Conference presented by the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Presented by the Springfield Business Development Corporation (SBDC), the Chamber’s economic development arm. Sponsored by BKD, LLP; City of Springfield; and UMB Bank.

The SBDC’s annual Economic Outlook Conference is designed to inform Springfield’s business and professional community about emerging economic trends and their impact on our region. In addition to the national economic outlook, this year’s conference will focus on two issues central to economic development and a community’s success: having a skilled and available workforce, and having a quality transportation infrastructure in place to support economic growth.

New Potted Flowers

The new potted flowers around the building look good – even during the hottest July on record. We water these by hand, so even during times of mandatory water conservation, it doesn’t take much water.

Missouri’s Unemployment Rate Drops

Missouri’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 7.3 percent in April, down from last April when the unemployment rate in Missouri was 8.6 percent.

Missouri was listed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in a news release as one of 24 states to register significantly lower unemployment rates compared to the same month of the last year.

Nevada had the highest unemployment rate during April of this year at 11.7 percent, followed by Rhode Island and California, with rates of 11.2 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively. The lowest jobless rate was reported in North Dakota at 3 percent, with Nebraska, 3.9 percent, and South Dakota, 4.3 percent, rounding out the Top 3, according to the release.

New Lobby Lighting

We caught an early morning glimpse of the new lighting in the lobby early this morning. The accent lighting was installed to add some color to the Executive Office Suites common area and make the building more energy efficient.

A little perk for coming to work early — we get this nice view of the RDI sculpture in early morning light.

Early Spring and new flower pots!

Early this year we bought new flowers pots for the Chestnut street-side of the office building, and with the early spring and are excited to start filling them up with new flowers.

Thursday was a busy day, shopping for flowers and filling the pots. I like buying locally grown flowers for our outdoor planters. There are cheaper places to buy the flowers, but over the years, I’ve noticed a difference between cheap flatbed flowers from a hardware store and locally grown flowers. The locally grown, like these in the greenhouses of Wickman’s garden will grow much bigger and better in the upcoming months.

Holiday Lights

Holiday lights are on, adding color to the cold winter nights and early mornings!

Just in time for our holiday party — a chance for all the tenants to get together and have lunch. Lunch was catered by the Traveling Chef — Spanish meatballs, tomato mozzarella salad, brownies, and Russ’s mom’s wassail punch!

Small Business Services at the Springfield-Greene County Library District

Have you been thinking about starting your own business or buying or expanding an existing one?

On Thursday, representatives from the Springfield Branch Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and SCORE, “Counselors to America’s Small Business,” will be available for individual consultations at the Springfield Library Center in the Business Resource Section at 4653 S. Campbell, near Sam’s and the new Academy Sports.

The consultation will be from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This is a drop-in, free event. No appointment necessary.

Small business owners and those seeking to purchase or start a business are encouraged to come by the center and visit privately with these representatives.

Information will be available concerning SBA loans, free small business counseling and training, and other SBA programs.

The Springfield-Greene County Library also offers several business services, including many business publications and online business tools, a quarterly “Minding Your Business” newsletter, and a Business Librarian Kelly Miller who is available for consultations and orientations to the Library’s business services.
